VOLUME 2, NUMBER 20, APRIL 10, 2011
IT'S ALMOST HOLY WEEK
On the First Sunday in Lent we heard of Jesus' temptation—to be a king no different than the kings of this world—and his overcoming of this temptation. On the Second Sunday in Lent we heard about being born again—entering into a completely new and different life—by water and the Holy Spirit. On the Third Sunday in Lent we heard of Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well and of life-giving water. Last week, on the Fourth Sunday in Lent, we heard of the movement from darkness to light. We hear in the gospel this week the story of the raising of Lazarus. On the eve of Jesus' passion Jesus comes face to face with his nemesis—death itself—and he wins life for his good friend, Lazarus.
All of this—the temptation to stay in the old life (which is death), the invitation to rebirth into a new life, lifegiving water, darkness to light, the conquering of death—points to the central liturgical celebration and truth of the Church—the Paschal Mystery.
Palm Sunday—The Sunday of the Passion, begins Holy Week. At the end of that week is the great three day liturgy that forms the center of our Prayer Book and the central celebration of life and of our lives as Church. Mark your calendars. Do everything you can to be here those three nights. Invite your friends. Prepare for that great celebration. Easter—new life—is coming.
